Building AperioFlow in public: one tool for tracking work, errors and uptime

Why we put tasks, errors, uptime and status pages in one place

When something breaks on a client site, the person who hears about it first is usually the one who has to fix it. That person is often a solo developer, a freelancer, or someone in a small agency with three other jobs open. The work, the error, the uptime check and the message to customers should not each live in a different tool.

AperioFlow puts them in one place. You plan work as tasks, watch sites with monitors, catch errors, and tell your customers what is happening on a status page. When something goes wrong, you can see the task, the alert and the status together, rather than switching between tabs and inboxes.

What works today, stated plainly

We would rather say clearly what the product does now than list things we hope to add.

The free plan includes 10 monitors. The team plan costs 29 pounds a month flat for up to 10 people, as shown on the pricing page. Monitors check your sites and alert you when they stop responding. Heartbeat monitors wait for a ping from a cron job or a backup script, and alert you when the ping does not arrive. Status pages let you post updates for your customers to read.

Alert emails go only to people in your organisation. The service is hosted in France and run from the UK.

We are a small company with a live product, so the app itself is the best guide to what is there. If a feature is not in the app today, we will not describe it as if it is.

Tweed Tyne runs its own work on it

Tweed Tyne runs its own work on AperioFlow. Its tasks, its monitors and its status updates all go through the same product you would sign up for. That is the simplest test we can offer: we use it for the work we would ask a customer to trust it with.

It also means we see the rough edges first. When a task is hard to find, or an alert arrives at an awkward time, we hear about it from our own team before we hear about it from anyone else. We fix those things because we have to live with them too.

You can download your data: what the export contains

You can download your data. The download gives you a copy of what you have put into AperioFlow, which you can keep, read, or take to another tool.

We do not want to describe the file in more detail than the product shows you, because the layout may change as the product changes. Before you rely on the export, download a copy from your account and look at it. That takes a few minutes and tells you more than any description could.

If you are thinking about leaving, or simply want a copy for your own records, do it before you make any other changes. Keeping a copy of your own project data is a sensible habit whatever tool you use.

What we are still learning as a small company run from the UK

We are a small team, and we are still learning. We are learning how to answer support questions quickly, how to write incident updates that customers find clear, and how to keep the product simple while more teams use it.

Run from the UK, we work in the same hours as most of our customers. That helps when a site goes down at nine in the morning and the person responsible needs an answer now. It also means we can talk to customers in plain English about what the product does and does not do.

We read feedback from people who run their own sites. We would rather fix one clear problem well than add ten things at once, and we will keep saying so when we get it wrong.

If you look after a site or a few client sites and want one place to track the work, the errors, the uptime and the messages to customers, you can Start free at https://app.aperioflow.co.uk/#/signup. The free plan includes 10 monitors, so you can see how it fits your work before you decide anything else.
